What’s On: September 2017

Did you have a good Summer? The last few months for us have been very exciting – we have discovered and got to know many more local creatives at various events across Cambridgeshire, we hit over 1,000 shares on our community hashtag on Instagram: #CambsCreativeTreasures, and we have been working hard on our relaunch. The website is currently in editing mode and we look forward to sharing the new site with you very soon! One of our aims is to help uncover the creative scene across the county and we love sharing our round-up of events taking place each month. What can you expect in September? Read on to find out about the first ever Cambridge Home + Garden Show – on today until 5pm – as well the details of the Autumn edition of the Cambridge Creatives Photowalk.

There is still time to visit the annual selected exhibition this month, hosted by the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists. SEAW promote the works of watercolour artists from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Bedfordshire through the society. They provide members with opportunities to exhibit together, to attend workshops to improve their expertise, and to be a part of a social and knowledge-sharing community. Cambridge Original Printmakers are looking for submissions to their 2018 biennale exhibition. They have put out an open call for local printmakers to submit their work by the end of January 2018. This is a fantastic opportunity for printmakers living or working within 35 miles of Cambridge!

After closing during the Summer Holidays we are pleased to announce that the Cambridge Community Scrapstore re-opened for the Autumn term on Wednesday evening! They are holding their monthly Saturday opening today between 1:30-3PM – head down to pick up art and craft supplies for your next project. You will find an incredible range of affordable recycled creative materials including wallpaper samples, and back-to-school supplies such as colouful exercise books and squared paper. The first ever Cambridge Home + Garden Show – which has been organised by local interior designer and project manager Jennifer Chong (Feioi) – is taking place today at The Guildhall in Cambridge. If you are looking for some inspiration on how to add to or completely revive the design of your home then this event will be a fantastic opportunity for you to meet and receive advice from professional design experts. Looking to buy that special piece to display in your home? Eclectic Mix Cambridge are exhibiting works from a variety of local artists on their stand.

Open House, Art in North Cambridge is a long-term creative project and partnership, run in association with Kettle’s Yard gallery and resident artists, for the people who live and work in the area. The current Artist in Residence Harold Offeh is hosting a free gathering next weekend which will see artists and makers from North Cambridge – along with bakers, growers and others within the community – come together to celebrate the creativity within their sector of the City. Take along your latest creative project and get to know other artists and makers within your local community. The Creative Lunch is a ‘one woman band with one goal, to bring the artist community of the Cambridgeshire area together’. They host regular events in both Cambridge and St Neots – a great opportunity to get creative, network, chat, laugh and eat! This is the second event at their new venue Stem + Glory – a Vegan eatery on Mitcham’s Corner which opened in October 2016. Find out more details and RSVP to the event here.

Where: Michaelhouse Café, Trinity St, Cambridge CB2 1SU

Eclectic Mix Cambridge showcase the work of local artists and makers – such as jewellery designer-maker Birgitte Bruun and glass / textile artist Bex Burston – through their online marketplace and numerous pop-up events across the City. Visit them at Michaelhouse Café throughout September to discover and shop their collection of original artwork, prints and high quality handmade goods. Take a look below to see the venues hosting Eclectic Mix throughout the rest of the year – this includes a two day Christmas fair at St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church!

We love discovering new social events aimed at bringing the local creative community together. Quirkshop – an informal meet-up which will take place once a fortnight – aims to bring together like-minded creatives from in and around Cambridge to socialise over a few drinks. Quirkshop launched on 31st August 2017 and they have just announced the date of the next meet-up which will take place at The Blue Moon pub in Cambridge. Find out more and RSVP to the event here.

Where: Meet at ‘Reality Checkpoint’, Parker’s Piece

We are really looking forward to the Autumn edition of the Cambridge Creatives Photowalk after we had such an amazing time at the Spring event which brought 70+ attendees to the city. Join Claire (Claireabellemakes), Jo (Hello Sunshine) and other like-minded creatives for a walk around Cambridge in order to capture some of the city’s Instagram-worthy sites. The walk lasts for around 2.5 hours starting at Parker’s Piece and finishing at Jesus Lane bus stop in time to catch a ride to the Food Park Night Market! Be sure to dig out your colourful attire and make sure to RSVP to the event here. Where: Memorial Hall, Great Wilbraham, Cambridge

Local jewellery designer-makers Cheryl Bird and Linda Bartlett will be showcasing Divine Decadence Jewellery at this event later this month. You will also find works by local printmaker Jackie Duckworth, ceramicist Sarah Went and watercolour artist Helen Clarke. For those huge GBBO fans – like us – head down to see 2015 finalist Ian Cumming who will be demonstrating his baking skills!



When: Saturday 30th September 2017 @ 10-3:30PM
Where: Peterborough Garden Park, Peterborough PE1 4YZ

Peterborough’s regular artisan craft fayre is held on the last Saturday of every month. You can find arts, crafts and gifts as well as handmade sweet treats. They showcase goods from artists, designers and makers from in and around the Peterborough area. It is free to enter and there is free parking nearby.

Blue Cross Cambridge – a local animal rehoming centre – will be holding an art auction in October and are looking for artists who would be willing to donate work for a very worthy cause. All money raised from this event will go towards helping the animals in their care. Do you have an artwork you could donate? You can drop it off at the centre which is open everyday from 11-4PM.
