Histon Handmade Easter Fair 2017

Last month we visited the Histon Handmade contemporary design and craft fair held at St Andrew’s Centre. This was the second Histon Handmade event hosted by founder Claire Howieson – a jewellery designer-maker from Oakington, Cambridge. Participants are carefully selected to ensure for a unique event and the standard of handmade goods was very impressive; with ceramics, jewellery, original artwork, soft furnishings, clocks, stationery, baskets, prints and greeting cards on offer.

We discovered new works such as the fascinating metal clocks by Rebecca Stark, iconic Cambridge scenes by printmaker Sarah Vigliotti, and sleek wooden jewellery boxes by furniture-designer Andrew Strickland. We chatted with Sue Smith about urban sketching in Cambridge and Claire Howieson talked us through the different processes of stone setting in jewellery making.

It was great to see bookbinder Edel Hopkin who was displaying not only her own work but that of her students. Edel puts on an incredible programme of classes including a beginner bookbinding course. She told us about her work inspired by ‘The Cockerell Collection’ – a unique set of hand marbled papers which have been used by bookbinders worldwide for over 100 years.

The style was developed by the Cockerell family in Letchworth and then in Grantchester, and brought to the Cockerell Marbled Papers studio in Barton, Cambridge. The papers are no longer in production and Edel has a very conservative stock of these which she has been lovingly incorporating into her work in order to preserve a slice of Cambridge creative history. I have since discovered that you can attend workshops at the studio to learn paper marbling techniques, find out more here.
